TPWD: 26-year-old tuber drowned in San Marcos River

The body of a tuber who went missing Saturday in the San Marcos River was recovered Sunday, according to a news release from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Ryan Hyman, a 26-year-old Austin resident, was found by first responders in Martindale near the same area he went missing, according to the news release

Witnesses called 911 at around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, when Hyman went missing in the river.

Hyman allegedly left his tube to swim after a tube that drifted away, according to the news release. Witnesses said they saw him struggle in the water while he was swimming toward the tube.

The people in Hyman’s party were unable to reach him due to heavy congestion on the river, and two bystanders who jumped in to save him were also unable to save him, according to the news release.

Hyman disappeared in the water, and his body did not turn up until the following day. Texas Game Wardens, the South Hays Fire Department Dive Team and the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office worked together on the search.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine if alcohol played a factor in the incident, according to the news release.

“As tubing on the San Marcos River becomes more popular every year, so do the dangers of
overcrowding on the river, in addition to natural hazards like rushing rapids, swift currents and river eddies,” Texas Game Warden Joann Garza-Mayberry said. “We ask that all river-goers be aware of their surroundings, stay hydrated and consume alcohol in moderation, to avoid the numerous risks present on the river.”
