Houston mother who ran over, killed son charged in his death, prosecutors say

A Houston mother who told police she accidentally ran over her 3-year-old son is now facing charges in his death, prosecutors say.

Lexus Stagg, 26, told police she accidentally backed over her son around 7 p.m. June 11 inside her apartment complex in the 10800 block of Richmond. The boy, whose name was not released, died at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital that night.

Stagg said that she was driving her 2006 Lincoln Navigator in reverse when she hit her son, who she initially thought was a speed bump, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said that she instead was driving forward when her three children ran out in front of her, including the boy. She allegedly ran over the boy, who became lodged underneath the front right tire of the vehicle.

She then drove forward and ran over the boy again with the rear-right tire, prosecutors said.

“You should be playing Peek-A-Boo with a three-year-old instead of forcing him to try and dodge a 5,600 pound deadly weapon,” Harris County District Attorney’s Office Vehicular Crimes Chief Sean Teare said.

Stagg was arrested Thursday on a third-degree felony criminally negligent homicide charge. She’s being held in lieu of a $1,500 bond, although prosecutors argued for a higher bond amount of $50,000 during a probable cause hearing.

If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison.
