Committee formed to review PTI’s constitution

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan in his capacity as chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday constituted a 10-member committee to review the party’s constitution which had only been implemented two months back.

According to a notification, the Constitution Review Committee comprises former finance minister Asad Umar, Dr Babar Awan, Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Human Rights Minister Dr Shireen Mazari, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Qasim Khan Suri, Saifullah Khan Nyazee, Arshad Dad, Syed Firdous Shamim Naqvi and Dr Abul Hassan.

The notification has been issued by the party’s central secretary general, Arshad Dad.

Dr Abul Hassan has been nominated as convener of the committee.

A revised draft of the party’s constitution was presented for formal approval by the PTI’s National Council during a ceremony held in the capital on May 1.

The PTI had begun the process of reorganisation by constituting a 21-member committee to review the party’s constitution and seeking applications from aspirants for its various organisational posts in November last year.

When asked why the party had constituted another constitution review committee, a PTI spokesman said the main purpose was to amend the constitution after a decision to set up a South Punjab organisation of the party.

He said the committee would also suggest improvement in some of the clauses of the constitution.
