Off-duty assistant police chief injured by suspected shoplifters in Houston

An off-duty police officer from East Texas shot at suspected shoplifters who reportedly tried to run over him at a business in Houston’s Northshore community, at one point  dragging him about 200 feet, police said.

The officer, an assistant chief with the  Bridge City Police Department, east of Beaumont,  was transported to a hospital as a precaution after the incident Wednesday evening, Houston police said. He was last listed in good condition.

Authorities were searching for the suspected shoplifters.

The assistant chief was in full uniform while shopping about 6:50 p.m. for personal items at the business in the 1000 block of Federal Road, to prepare for possible weekend storms, police said.

Someone in the store flagged him down about shoplifters in the area and gave him a description of their vehicle. The officer then went to the parking lot and attempted to stop the vehicle at gunpoint, police said.

The driver intentionally hit the officer, police said. The officer grabbed the hood of the car as he was dragged about 100 to 200 feet through the parking lot, police said.

Police said the officer fired his gun at least once before he was thrown from the car. The suspects fled.

Houston police said they have not been able to release information about the suspects or their vehicle. Police said they don’t believe the officer shot the suspects, but the investigation is ongoing.
