Cold rain, wind chills in the 20s set for Dallas-Fort Worth on Wednesday as snow, sleet stays west

Dallas-Fort Worth has mostly been spared from the chance of snow and sleet on Wednesday.

But the area will face a cold rain and frigid weather, with temperatures in the 30s and wind chills in the 20, according to KXAS-TV (NBC5) meteorologist Grant Johnston.

It “looks like this event is going to have minimal impact on the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, with bigger concerns to the west and northwest,” Johnston said.

Portions of North Texas, including Denton and Tarrant counties, are under a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. Wednesday. Those areas are more likely to see some sleet, with the heaviest precipitation expected to fall between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

“There could be some sleet that mixes with the rain, but I do not expect widespread travel problems here,” Johnston said.

The winter weather advisory does not include Dallas or Collin counties.

It’s still possible Dallas-Fort Worth could see some snow flurries later in the day, but significant travel impacts are not expected, according to Johnston.

Just before 6 a.m., there was only one cancellation between DFW International Airport and Love Field Airport, according to FlightAware. It was unclear whether that cancellation was weather related.

All Saints’ Episcopal School in Fort Worth was closed on Wednesday, but no other school districts in the Dallas-Fort Worth area were closed or starting late.

Rain is not expected all day in Dallas-Fort Worth, but the winter chill will last through the day and into tomorrow. Highs on Wednesday were not expected to get out of the 30s. Highs on Thursday are forecast to rise into the mid- to upper-40s, according to Johnston.

Earlier this week, the National Weather Service had issued a winter storm watch for parts of North Texas, forecasting the possibility of as much as 5 inches of snow and sleet possible in some areas west and northwest of Dallas-Fort Worth. But temperatures did not get cold enough for more than just a cold rain.

“A degree or two makes a big difference on a day like today,” Johnston said.

Here’s what KXAS-TV (NBC5) has in the forecast:

Wednesday: 37/34; cold rain with areas of rain and sleet

Thursday: 48/28

Friday: 61/34

Saturday: 59/39

Sunday: 64/42
