Wilson double rocks Everton, Ward-Prowse shines on birthday

LONDON: Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson struck twice to seal a 2-1 win that stopped Everton returning to the top of the Premier League on Sunday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side would have gone back above leaders Liverpool on goal difference with a win at St James’ Park. But, with James Rodriguez and Richarlison missing from the Everton team, they succumbed to a limp defeat as Wilson bagged his brace in the second half before Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s late reply.

Newcastle went ahead when Wilson scored from the spot following an innocuous foul by Andre Gomes on the striker in the 54th minute, and he added a second by bundling home a cross from Ryan Fraser five minutes from the end of normal time.

Calvert-Lewin scored a stoppage-time consolation goal for Everton but Newcastle survived to take a win that puts them in 10th position on 11 points, while Everton are second on 13, three points behind Merseyside rivals Liverpool and level with third-placed Southampton who earlier weathered a late fightback from Aston Villa to take a 4-3 win.

James Ward-Prowse celebrated his 26th birthday by scoring two fine free-kicks against Villa, who suffered their second loss after a winning start to the season.

Southampton led 4-0 thanks to three goals from set pieces, including Ward-Prowse’s identical free-kicks for the second and third goals, and a powerful long-range strike from Danny Ings. Villa seemed out of the game, even after Tyrone Mings made it 4-1 with a header, but scored twice more in stoppage time before running out of time to earn a draw.

On Saturday, Diogo Jota came off the bench and scored in the 85th minute to cap Liverpool’s dramatic fightback as the Premier League champions beat West Ham United 2-1.

Pablo Fornals took advantage of a poor header from Joe Gomez to fire West Ham ahead in the 10th minute but the champions drew level just before the break when Mohamed Salah was fouled in the area by Arthur Masuaku and the Egyptian converted from the spot.

Chelsea are four points behind Liverpool after with a 3-0 win at Burnley secured through goals by Hakim Ziyech, Kurt Zouma and Timo Werner.
