Resident burned, condo complex damaged after four-alarm fire in northeast Dallas

A condo resident in far northeast Dallas accidentally set his home on fire and burned himself early Friday while using his oven for heat, firefighters say.

One hundred city firefighters responded to extinguish the four-alarm blaze, which was reported a little before 1 a.m. at a condominium complex in the 9800 block of Walnut Street. Flames spread from the man’s third-floor unit into the breezeways and through the roof of the complex building before being put out around 2:30 a.m., according to Dallas-Fire Rescue.

The man was treated at a hospital for his burns and later released, the fire agency said. Although no one else was injured, at least three residents were displaced and power to more than a dozen condos in the complex was temporarily shut off due to the fire.

Investigators believe items left too close to the open electric oven likely caught fire. The man told authorities he called 911 after he was awakened by the glow from the fire in his kitchen.
