19 cats, 1 dog rescued by SPCA of Texas after deadly house fire in Hunt County

Nineteen cats and one dog were rescued from a deadly house fire in Hunt County on Monday, officials said.

The SPCA of Texas was contacted by authorities after the fire, which happened just outside of Greenville. The homeowner was killed in the blaze, along with four cats, the SPCA said.

It’s not clear where the fire occurred. The Hunt County Sheriff’s Department did not respond to requests for comment.

When the SPCA arrived, the dog was found in a crate and the cats were in various rooms. The animals had singed fur and were covered in soot and ash, the SPCA said.

The dog was coughing when the SPCA arrived, and many of the cats had runny eyes and diarrhea, the SPCA said.

Some of the cats were taken to the SPCA’s Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center in West Dallas. Others are being treated elsewhere for smoke inhalation.

One cat and the dog were taken to local animal hospitals for further treatment, the SPCA said.
