Dallas County reports 3,469 new coronavirus cases, 30 deaths; Tarrant adds 23 deaths

County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a written statement that Wednesday’s case number was the second-highest one-day total reported so far, behind only the 3,549 new cases on Jan. 12.

“While these are concerning numbers, and I hope the number of new cases and deaths decreases very soon, I am thankful we’ve been able to vaccinate almost 15,000 individuals at the Fair Park mega-vaccine clinic since last week, with thousands of more scheduled for today,” Jenkins said.

Meanwhile, the state warned that Texans must avoid another surge in cases as deaths continue to rise while hospitals are overburdened.

“Hospitals can’t take much more,” the state health department said on Twitter.

The latest Dallas County victims included eight Dallas residents: a man in his 60s, three men in their 70s, two women in their 70s, including one who lived in a long-term care facility, a man in his 80s and a woman in her 90s. All had underlying health problems.

Six Garland residents also died: a woman in her 50s, two women in their 60s, two men in their 70s and a woman in her 80s. Four of the six had underlying health problems.

Five Mesquite residents — a man in his 50s, a man in his 70s, a man and woman in their 80s and a woman in her 90s — also died. All had underlying health problems, and four lived at long-term care facilities.

Three Rowlett residents were among the victims: a man in his 50s, a man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s. All three had been hospitalized; one had underlying health problems.

Two Richardson residents also died, both women in their 70s. One lived in a long-term care facility.

The remaining victims were a Wilmer man in his 60s, a Glenn Heights woman in her 60s, an Irving man in his 80s, a Farmers Branch man in his 80s, a Cedar Hill woman in her 80s and a Grand Prairie man in his 80s.

Of the new cases, 3,197 were confirmed and 272 were probable.

The newly reported cases bring the county’s total to 239,683 — 212,188 confirmed cases and 27,495 probable cases. The death toll stands at 1,917.

Health officials use hospitalizations, intensive-care admissions and emergency room visits as key metrics to track the real-time impact of COVID-19 in the county. In the 24-hour period that ended Tuesday, 1,187 COVID-19 patients were in acute care in hospitals in the county. During the same period, 522 ER visits were for symptoms of the disease.

According to the state’s data, 91,594 people in Dallas County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 15,147 are fully immunized.

Texas

Across the state, 31,337 more cases were reported Wednesday: 30,529 new cases and 808 older cases that were recently reported by labs.

The state also reported 450 more COVID-19 deaths, raising its toll to 32,844.

Of the new cases, 25,512 were confirmed and 5,017 were probable. Of the older cases, 505 were confirmed and 303 were probable.

The newly reported cases bring the state’s total to 2,166,365 —1,898,631 confirmed cases and 267,734 probable cases.

There are 13,870 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals, including 3,873 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. On Tuesday, 23.32% of patients in the hospital region covering the Dallas-Fort Worth area were COVID-19 patients — above the 15% threshold the state has used to define high hospitalizations.

The seven-day average positivity rate statewide for molecular tests, based on the date of test specimen collection, was 16.61% as of Tuesday. For antigen tests, the positivity rate for the same period was 10.34%. A molecular test is considered more accurate and is sometimes also called a PCR test; an antigen test is also called a rapid test. Gov. Greg Abbott has said a positivity rate above 10% is cause for concern.

According to the state’s data, 1,241,950 people in Texas have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 184,909 are fully immunized.

Tarrant County

Tarrant County reported 2,074 coronavirus cases and 23 deaths Wednesday.

The latest victims included eight Fort Worth residents: a man in his 50s, a man in his 60s, a man and woman in their 70s, a man in his 80s, and two women and a man who were over 90.

Five Arlington residents were among the latest victims: a man and woman in their 50s, a woman in her 60s and two men in their 70s. Two Euless residents, a woman in her 60s and a man in his 80s, also died.

The eight remaining victims were a Pantego man in his 50s, a Bedford woman in her 50s, an Azle man in his 50s, a North Richland Hills man in his 70s, a Mansfield woman in her 70s, a Sansom Park woman in her 80s, a Hurst man in his 80s and a Saginaw woman who was over 90.

At least 22 of the victims had underlying health problems, officials said. It was unknown whether the remaining victim had underlying health problems.

Of the new cases, 1,770 were confirmed and 304 were probable.

The newly reported cases bring the county’s total to 199,521 — 172,771 confirmed cases and 26,750 probable cases. The death toll stands at 1,927.

According to the county, 1,429 people were in hospitals being treated for the virus as of Wednesday.

According to the state’s data, 65,995 people in Tarrant County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 5,992 are fully immunized.

Collin County

The state added 699 coronavirus cases and seven deaths to Collin County’s totals Wednesday.

No details about the latest victims were available.

Of the new cases, 353 were confirmed and 346 were probable.

The newly reported cases bring the county’s total to 65,420 — 56,499 confirmed cases and 8,921 probable cases. The death toll stands at 490.

According to the county, 530 people are hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state’s data, 32,180 people in Collin County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 4,559 are fully immunized.

Denton County

Denton County reported 861 coronavirus cases and eight deaths Wednesday.

The latest victims included five residents of long-term care facilities who were all over 80: two women who lived at Lake Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lewisville, a man who lived at The Oaks at Flower Mound, a woman who lived at Hollymead in Flower Mound, and a man who lived at Prairie Estates in Frisco.

The remaining victims were an Argyle man in his 60s, a Carrollton man in his 70s and man over 80 who lived in The Colony.

Of the new cases, 587 were confirmed and 273 were probable.

The newly reported cases bring the county’s total to 48,196 — 38,799 confirmed cases and 9,397 probable cases. The death toll stands at 265.

According to the county, 196 people are hospitalized with the virus.

According to the state’s data, 19,744 people in Denton County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 2,515 are fully immunized.

Other counties

The Texas Department of State Health Services has taken over reporting for these other North Texas counties. In some counties, new data may not be reported every day.

The latest numbers are:

Rockwall County: 8,518 cases (7,131 confirmed and 1,387 probable), 79 deaths.

Kaufman County: 11,994 cases (10,430 confirmed and 1,564 probable), 157 deaths.

Ellis County: 17,207 cases (15,188 confirmed and 2,019 probable), 205 deaths.

Johnson County: 15,098 cases (13,481 confirmed and 1,617 probable), 215 deaths.
