Dallas County reported 273 new coronavirus cases Sunday, as well as 22 more deaths from COVID-19.
The latest victims include 17 men and five women ranging in age from their 30s to their 90s.
Nine victims were from Dallas, two from Garland, two from Irving, two from Richardson, two from DeSoto, and one each from Cedar Hill, Grand Prairie, Farmers Branch, Balch Springs and Mesquite. Three victims were residents of long-term care facilities, and all but two had underlying health conditions, the county reported.
Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said Saturday that though the count of reported cases was artificially low because of last week’s bad weather, he thinks the numbers are declining.
Of the new cases, 229 were confirmed and 44 were probable. The numbers bring the county’s overall case total to 276,945, including 242,770 confirmed and 34,175 probable. The death toll is 2,838.
Health officials use hospitalizations, intensive-care admissions and emergency room visits as key metrics to track the real-time impact of COVID-19 in the county. Because of a lag in weekend reporting, the data will next be available Tuesday.
According to the state, 253,721 people in Dallas County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 109,642 are fully vaccinated.
Testing, vaccinating
Some county health providers reopened testing and vaccination sites over the weekend.
Jenkins said the Fair Park vaccination site reopened Sunday and is prioritizing people who are due for second doses. Tarrant County resumed its vaccination site operations Friday.
Parkland Hospital said it would resume vaccinations Monday at its Ellis Davis Field House and Dallas College Eastfield Campus locations.
The hospital’s testing sites at Irving Health Center and West Dallas Multipurpose Center will reopen Monday, while its testing site at Sam Tasby Middle School in Dallas will reopen Wednesday.
Collin County said it would resume vaccinations at John Clark Stadium Monday. Denton County said it will reopen its vaccination clinic at Texas Motor Speedway Wednesday and that people who are due for their second shots will be prioritized.
Texas
Across the state, 4,484 more cases were reported Sunday, including 4,259 new cases and 225 older ones that labs recently reported.
The state also reported 130 COVID-19 deaths, raising its toll to 41,343.
Of the new cases, 3,617 were confirmed and 642 were probable. Of the older cases, 209 were confirmed and 16 were probable.
The state’s case total is now 2,588,101, including 2,245,634 confirmed and 342,467 probable.
There are 7,146 COVID-19 patients in Texas hospitals, including 1,868 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. On Saturday, 11.73% of patients in the hospital region covering the Dallas-Fort Worth area were COVID-19 patients — below the 15% threshold the state has used to define high hospitalizations.
The seven-day average positivity rate statewide for molecular tests, based on the date of test specimen collection, was 11.7% as of Saturday. Gov. Greg Abbott has said a test positivity rate above 10% is cause for concern. During the same period, the positivity rate for antigen tests was 2.85%. A molecular test is considered more accurate and is sometimes also called a PCR test; an antigen test is also called a rapid test.
According to the state, 3,107,515 people in Texas have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 1,344,003 are fully vaccinated.
Tarrant County
Tarrant County reported 328 coronavirus cases and 10 deaths Sunday.
The latest victims include five women and five men ranging from their 60s to older than 90.
Four victims were from Fort Worth, two from Arlington, two from Euless, and one each from Everman and Kennedale.
All but two had underlying high-risk health conditions.
Of the new cases, 206 were confirmed and 122 were probable. The numbers bring the county’s case total to 238,405, including 203,496 confirmed and 34,909 probable. The death toll is 2,767.
According to the county, 741 people were hospitalized with the virus as of Sunday.
According to the state, 191,014 people in Tarrant County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 101,020 are fully vaccinated.
Collin County
The state added 78 coronavirus cases and two deaths to Collin County’s totals Sunday.
No details about the latest victims were available.
All 78 cases were new and none was probable. The numbers bring the county’s case total to 81,208, including 68,742 confirmed and 12,466 probable. The death toll is 694.
According to the county, 264 people were hospitalized with the virus.
According to the state, 118,547 people in Collin County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 41,841 are fully vaccinated.
Denton County
Denton County Public Health said Tuesday that it would be closed through last week because of the weather and that no COVID-19 updates would be issued in the meantime.
The county last reported 60,167 cases — 46,439 confirmed and 13,728 probable. The death toll stood at 382.
According to the state, 65,607 people in Denton County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 28,596 are fully vaccinated.
Other counties
The Texas Department of State Health Services has taken over reporting for these other North Texas counties. In some counties, new data may not be reported every day.
The latest numbers are:
- Rockwall County: 10,336 cases (8,545 confirmed and 1,791 probable), 116 deaths.
- Kaufman County: 14,504 cases (12,447 confirmed and 2,057 probable), 212 deaths.
- Ellis County: 20,406 cases (17,742 confirmed and 2,664 probable), 268 deaths.
- Johnson County: 18,227 cases (15,825 confirmed and 2,402 probable), 308 deaths.
