Man killed cousin while trying to shoot other people in north Oak Cliff, Dallas police say

A Dallas man killed his cousin Monday afternoon while trying to shoot someone else, then dumped his body on the side of a road, police say.

Miguel Angel Deleon, 21, was booked into the Dallas County jail early Tuesday on a murder charge. His bail was set at $500,000, and he did not have an attorney listed in court records.

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, Deleon initially told police he and his cousin Carlos Roque were traveling in a truck about 2:30 p.m. in the 800 block of South Madison Avenue in north Oak Cliff. Three people in another vehicle shot at them and Roque was hit in the head, he said.

Roque was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Police wrote in the affidavit that burn marks around Roque’s gunshot wound showed that he had been shot from close range, however. They also wrote that Deleon pulled his cousin out of the truck and left him on the side of the road before returning to the scene after police had arrived.

Deleon later told a detective that he had fired back at the other vehicle and went home to hide his gun afterward, the affidavit says.

Police believe Deleon shot his cousin while firing at the other people, the affidavit says. They reported recovering a 9mm handgun from his home and plan to compare it to the bullet that killed Roque.

Court records show that Deleon is awaiting trial in an aggravated assault case in which he was accused of shooting another man in February 2019. As a condition of his bond, he is not allowed to possess a deadly weapon.
