9-year-old believed to have fatally shot 11-year-old boy in car in Pleasant Grove, Dallas police say

A 9-year-old boy is believed to have fatally shot an 11-year-old Sunday after they were left in a car outside a Pleasant Grove grocery store, Dallas police say.

Officers responded to the shooting about 12:45 p.m. outside the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 2827 S. Buckner Blvd., near Military Parkway, and found the wounded 11-year-old. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The boy’s mother, Keyamber Matlock, publicly identified the child as Dazmon Brown Jr. on Monday.

Matlock told KDFW-TV (Channel 4) that Dazmon was with an 11-year-old friend and the friend’s 9-year-old brother. The friend’s mother left the boys in her car while she was shopping, Matlock told the station.

Investigators said initial reports indicated the 9-year-old found a handgun inside the car.

“The youngest brother I guess ended up getting it off the safety and shot my child in his head,” Matlock told KDFW.

No one has been arrested, and police did not say Monday whether they expect charges to be filed.
