S&D Oyster in Uptown Dallas had a car crash through its wall — again

A vehicle barreled through the brick wall at S&D Oyster Company in Uptown Dallas, leaving a 6-foot-wide hole and a pile of bricks inside the restaurant.

According to a police report, the suspect driving the black Dodge Charger fled the scene and was not apprehended. The report called it a “major accident,” and it’s still an active investigation.

The restaurant was closed at the time of the crash, just before 3 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2021.

It’s the second time in eight months that a car has crashed through the restaurant wall in its 45 years in business on Dallas’ McKinney Avenue, says S&D owner Herb Story. A similar incident in November 2020 resulted in damage to the wall of the restaurant when an SUV drove through it.

Story describes the similar incident as “unbelievable.”

After the November 2020 incident, Story said at the time, “I’m getting so used to bad news that nothing shocks me anymore.” The first crash happened during the throes of the coronavirus pandemic.

The car entered the restaurant by driving through a parking spot with a sign marked “30 minute parking.” The parking lot serves neighboring businesses like 7-Eleven, LongShots Bar, LA Gourmet Pizza and Chipotle. A sign states that the spots are not for S&D Oyster.

Story hired a crew to patch the hole with plywood and boards and they opened on time, for lunch, just about eight hours after the incident on July 17, the owner says. Employees of Montgomery Masonry filled the hole with bricks later that day.

The restaurant continues to operate during normal business hours.
