Once a lumberyard, Arlington’s only live theater will get a $3 million facelift

The only live theater venue in Arlington will get a major overhaul in time for the 2022 season.

Theatre Arlington announced on Friday it has hired Arlington-based LBL Architects and Fort Worth-based RJM Contractors for a $3 million project, which is scheduled to finish in December with the theater reopening in January, 2022.

The project will include a new exterior, expanded entryway with new box office, an expanded lobby and concessions and bar area, according to the press release.

Inside, the theater will get a new stage and seats, dressing rooms, expanded backstage and new rooms for classes and summer camps. The theater will also renovate its rehearsal hall, meeting spaces and existing classrooms.

Along with the renovations, theater officials said in the release they are making “targeted efforts to become a more diverse theater onstage and in the seats.”

Previously home to the Kier Lumberyard, the venue transformed into a theater in 1991. This will be the largest renovation in the theater’s history.

Theatre Arlington received a $2 million grant from the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation for the project. So far, it has raised 78% of the additional $1 million it needs.
