Mesquite is planning for the future of parks and recreation. Here’s how to give input

Mesquite officials are working on the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan that will guide the next decade of decisions concerning parks and outdoor recreation and they want community input.

As part of this process, the city is seeking resident input through a resident survey that will be in place until August 15.

“This is the next step in the public helping us develop a plan that can be used as a guide for the future of parks and recreation for the next 10 years as our community grows in population,” Parks and Recreation director Elizabeth Harrell said in a release.

The survey includes questions about city facilities, programs and parks. The new master plan is expected to be completed later this fall, the city said in a release.

Mesquite currently has more than 80 parks and facilities and approximately 1,600 acres of park land. The city also boasts more than 17 miles of walking and biking trails — one of which will soon be connected to nearby cities.

The city has received recognition and accolades for its parks. Mesquite has been recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA designee every year since 1990 and in 2021 and City Lake Park has earned the Lone Star Legacy Park award from the Texas Recreation and Parks Society, according to the city.
