Dallas police officer on leave after video shows him punching man in face during Deep Ellum brawl

The Dallas Police Department has placed an officer on administrative leave and is conducting a criminal review after he punched a man several times in the face during a street brawl in Deep Ellum.

video circulating on social media shows a large group of men and women fighting near Elm Street and Malcolm X Boulevard. It’s not clear when the incident occurred.

Dallas police officers begin to break up the fight, and when a man appears to approach as they start to detain people, one of the officers tells him not to come closer.

“Back up, back up, back your ass up,” the officer tells the man while pushing him away. “Get off the [expletive] street.”

The camera briefly cuts away from the officer and the man. When it pans toward the other side of the street, the officer can be seen shoving the man into a post.

The officer, whose name was not publicly released, straddles the man and punches him at least six times. Several of the punches connect with the man’s face.

Two other officers grab the one who threw the punches and pull him away. They also detain the man who was punched while several bystanders protest the way he was treated.

The brief statement Wednesday from police did not provide any details about what led to the brawl or indicate whether anyone who was involved was arrested.

A spokesman said police Chief Eddie García “would like to commend those officers who recognize their duty to intervene in this incident and deescalated the situation.”

In June 2020, after the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, the Dallas Police Department issued a general order that requires members of the department to “either stop, or attempt to stop, another employee when force is being inappropriately applied or is no longer required.”
