Amber Alert suspect steers into car, killing himself and 2nd driver and injuring girl, police say

Authorities canceled an Amber Alert for a missing 8-year-old girl after she was found injured in a vehicle crash in Johnson County that killed two other people Saturday, the Bosque County Sheriff’s Office said.

An Amber Alert was issued for the girl early Saturday after her 7-year-old brother ran into a convenience store off Interstate 35 in Hill County to ask for help, Bosque County Sheriff Trace Hendricks said.

Hendricks said the boy told authorities that the man who took him and his sister, Randall Thurman, left the boy at the convenience store and drove off with the girl. The children’s mother told authorities that Thurman was a family member, and deputies learned he was a registered sex offender.

The boy was taken by ambulance to a medical facility for treatment, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities said that just after 9 a.m. Saturday, a resident called the Hill County Sheriff’s Office to report that a car matching the description of the vehicle detailed in the Amber Alert was on their property.

When deputies tried to pull the vehicle over, Thurman fled on FM171 toward Cleburne in Johnson County, authorities said.

Shortly after crossing into Johnson County, authorities said, the car crossed over the center line and drove at a high speed toward an oncoming vehicle. Deputies said they believed “the maneuver to have been intentional.”

The cars collided, and both drivers were killed. The driver of the second vehicle was not immediately identified.

The 8-year-old girl communicated with officers at the scene and was taken by helicopter to an area hospital, authorities said. Her condition wasn’t immediately available.

The children’s mother first reported them missing from a home in Walnut Springs, some 90 miles southwest of Dallas, at about 10:45 p.m. Friday.
