Dallas firefighter badly hurt in apartment explosion released from hospital; 2 remain hospitalized

A Dallas firefighter who was seriously injured in the explosion at the Highland Hills Apartments last month was released from the hospital Friday, Dallas Fire-Rescue said.

Officer Pauline Perez’s release came 16 days after the explosion toppled part of one building in the southeast Oak Cliff apartment complex, injuring eight people and displacing scores more.

Perez was burned in the blast, Dallas Fire-Rescue said.

Capt. Christopher Gadomski and Driver Engineer Ronald W. Hall, who both suffered burns and injuries to their legs, remained hospitalized Friday. A fourth firefighter, Officer Andrew D. Curtis, was treated and released the day of the explosion for a foot injury.

The fire department tweeted pictures of Perez, her hands bandaged, hugging Gadomski after being discharged from Parkland Memorial Hospital.

While firefighters reported smelling gas shortly before the Sept. 29 explosion, the cause of the blast remains under investigation.

One building at the apartment complex had to be torn down after the explosion, while others were damaged. Multiple residents have said their apartments were burglarized in the weeks following the blast.
