Denton County deputy fatally shoots 35-year-old man authorities say was armed with a knife

A Denton County deputy fatally shot a man early Friday in the northwestern part of the county.

Deputies were called about 3 a.m. to the 11400 block of Chisum Road, near FM2450, where a disturbance had been reported.

A woman told dispatchers that her husband had kicked in a door to their home and was yelling at her to kill him, according to a report the Denton County Sheriff’s Office submitted to the Texas attorney general’s office. The woman, who locked herself in a bathroom and called 911, said that her husband left the home with a large knife.

Two deputies located the man, who attempted to assault them, verbally threatened them and made suicidal statements, the report says.

The report the sheriff’s office submitted to the attorney general’s office said the man was armed with one knife, but an earlier news release said the man had two knives.

At one point, the man charged at the deputies, leading one of them to fire his handgun at the man. The man was struck multiple times and had injuries to his legs and chest, the report says.

Deputies provided first aid until an ambulance arrived, the sheriff’s office said. The man was taken to Medical City Denton Hospital, where he died several hours later.

The sheriff’s office identified him as 35-year-old Gregory Gene Goodall of Sanger. His name could not be confirmed through public records.

The Texas Rangers are conducting an investigation into the shooting, the sheriff’s office said.

Goodall is the fourth man to be fatally shot by Denton County deputies in recent years.

In April 2020, deputies shot Marlon Aaron Bonds, 53, outside a Buc-ee’s in Denton after he reportedly pulled out a handgun. He was suspected of shooting his girlfriend.

In September 2019, deputies fatally shot Kristopher Scott Adams, 37, who was wanted on felony warrants out of Florida and reportedly pointed a handgun at authorities. That June, deputies killed Jack Daniel West, 61, who had been holding three residents hostage in Lantana.
