HCSO: Father charged with felony murder after 11-year-old killed in drunken New Year’s Eve wreck

A Magnolia man was charged with felony murder after a suspected drunken driving crash that killed his 11-year-old daughter in eastern Harris County on New Year’s Eve.

Jorge Ledezma Echavarria was driving a 2002 Chevy Tahoe in the 14200 block of Crosby Freeway around 8:30 p.m. when he allegedly flew through the intersection at the East Sam Houston feeder, disregarding a traffic control device.

His Tahoe crashed into a Ford Expedition headed north on the feeder road, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

It’s not clear if the Expedition driver was injured, but the girl in the back passenger seat of the Chevy – 11-year-old Vanessa Ledezma – was flown to the hospital afterward.

She died just before 10 p.m.

At the hospital, 33-year-old Ledezma showed signs of impairment, authorities said. He was arrested and charged with felony murder, and is due back in court on Wednesday.

He doesn’t appear to have any prior convictions in Harris County, and the current case is still under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division
