Houston weekly crime report: Incidents of theft, burglary drop

Crime incidents in Houston saw an overall decrease last week, for the second week in a row, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources. Incidents fell to 1,693 for the week of Jan. 14, down from 1,980 the week before.

The offenses that decreased the most were theft and assault. Theft fell to 1,075 incidents last week, from 1,255 the week before. Assault went from 209 to 163. Reports of assault have continued to fall for the last two weeks.

There were 238 reported burglary incidents last week. That represents a decrease from 268 incidents the previous week. There were also 154 incidents of robbery, down from 163 the week before.

Among the few types of offenses that saw an uptick last week, shootings went from 12 to 14.

There were 49 reports of “other” crimes, a decrease of 24 from the previous week. SpotCrime’s broad “other” category includes a variety of offenses like fraud, trespassing, public disturbance and traffic violations. Of those incidents, 21 involved arrests, such as for drug possession, down from 28 reported arrests the week before.

Considering the concentration of crime across the city, Alief, Sharpstown and Northside/Northline continued to have the most reported incidents last week.

Regarding when crime most often occurs, Fridays, Thursdays and Tuesdays witnessed the most reported crimes last week. The largest decrease from the previous week occurred on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, while incidents on Fridays went up. Early afternoon, late afternoon and early morning saw the most crime last week.
