Police shoot man they say held woman against her will, carjacked another during chase in far northeast Dallas

An armed man accused of holding a woman against her will and carjacking another while leading police on a chase was shot Wednesday afternoon by officers in a far northeast Dallas gated community.

Police were called about 4:30 p.m. to a motel in the 9500 block of Forest Lane, where a woman was said to be being held. The man jumped out of a window and started running from officers. During the chase, he pointed a gun at his head multiple times and made threats to shoot himself, Deputy Chief Thomas Castro said.

The man, who was wearing body armor, ran into a wooded area, where police could hear shots being fired, Castro said.

KXAS-TV (NBC5)‘s helicopter captured video of the man exiting the woods shirtless and carjacking a woman at gunpoint in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 12200 block of Abrams Road.

Shots were fired at the vehicle and the man, a 26-year-old whose identity has not been released, drove through the complex gate before crashing into a light pole. He got out of the SUV and jumped a fence into a backyard of a home inside a gated complex in the 12200 block of Jackson Creek Drive, Castro said.

The man got into a vehicle that was parked in a driveway then got out and went into an open garage and into a house, where he was confronted by an armed homeowner, police said. Officials do not think the homeowner fired on the man.

He went back outside and was surrounded by Dallas police and officers with the Dallas County Community College District, which has a campus nearby.

Officers gave commands to the man, who had a knife. He did not comply, and officers with both agencies fired, striking the man, Castro said. It is not clear who struck the man or how many shots were fired.

He was taken to an area hospital and was in surgery Wednesday night. An update on his condition was not available.

The woman who was being held and the carjacking victim were both reported to be physically ok.

No officers were injured in the incident, and police have not released the names of those involved.
