2 charged in burgling Tony Buzbee’s River Oaks mansion

Police have arrested two men accused of breaking into Houston mayoral candidate Tony Buzbee’s River Oaks mansion and making off with more than $5 million in fine art, guns and watches, according to court documents.

A female tipster called Buzbee in February and later helped Houston police identify Nicholas Johnson, 36, and Julian Franklin, 33, as the suspects in the Feb. 4 break-in that woke up Buzbee on the morning after a Super Bowl party that he hosted at his estate. Buzbee wrote in a Facebook post at the time that he had armed himself with a gun and confronted the burglars. The weapon misfired, he said, and the suspects escaped.

Johnson was arrested Wednesday and charged with theft, while Franklin, 33, was arrested Tuesday and charged with burglary of a habitation, court records show.

Prosecutors said works of famed painters Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso were among the six pieces of fine art taken from Buzbee’s home. The stolen property also included two computers, two guns, a ring and 30 watches, according to court documents detailing Johnson’s arrest. The stolen goods were worth more than $5 million, records show.

The tipster contacted Buzbee after he advertised a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

She showed Buzbee photos of the stolen goods that Franklin allegedly sent her for a potential sale, authorities said Wednesday night during a probable cause hearing.

Franklin recounted the burglary to the woman and said he used his mother’s vehicle, the prosecutor said. He then tried selling her a Rolex watch alleged to have been stolen from Buzbee’s home.

She negotiated a price on some of the stolen goods with Johnson, whom she knew as “CJ,” as police investigators listened to the phone call.

“CJ was trying to off-load the property,” the prosecutor said in court.

Late on Thursday, Buzbee said he learned of the busts from Police Chief Art Acevedo and the detective handling the investigation.

“I am glad the police and the lead detective worked so hard on this,” the mayoral hopeful said.”They have more work to do. Hoping I get some of my stuff back, especially my Aggie ring.”

Buzbee was under the impression the woman’s tip is what led to the arrests. Citing police, he said three people were Bloods gang members.

According to prosecutors, the woman was interviewed on April 25, the same day as her arrest on unrelated charges of fraud and possession of prescription drug charges. Her lawyer, Maverick Ray, said Friday that she has been receiving threats ever since she was linked to the tip.

Johnson was on deferred adjudication for drug possession at the time of his arrest. He and Franklin were denied bail.
