Police have arrested two men accused of breaking into Houston mayoral candidate Tony Buzbee’s River Oaks mansion and making off with more than $5 million in fine art, guns and watches, according to court documents.
A female tipster called Buzbee in February and later helped Houston police identify Nicholas Johnson, 36, and Julian Franklin, 33, as the suspects in the Feb. 4 break-in that woke up Buzbee on the morning after a Super Bowl party that he hosted at his estate. Buzbee wrote in a Facebook post at the time that he had armed himself with a gun and confronted the burglars. The weapon misfired, he said, and the suspects escaped.
Johnson was arrested Wednesday and charged with theft, while Franklin, 33, was arrested Tuesday and charged with burglary of a habitation, court records show.
Prosecutors said works of famed painters Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso were among the six pieces of fine art taken from Buzbee’s home. The stolen property also included two computers, two guns, a ring and 30 watches, according to court documents detailing Johnson’s arrest. The stolen goods were worth more than $5 million, records show.
The tipster contacted Buzbee after he advertised a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
