Atascocita assisted living center worker arrested for allegedly assaulting elderly dementia patient

A former Houston caretaker is accused of severely injuring an elderly woman inside an Atascocita assisted living facility, police say.

Katiuscia Martinez, 43, is allegedly seen on surveillance video pushing an 88-year-old woman to the ground while the woman was eating inside the Autumn Grove Cottage in the 5500 block of Atascocita Boulevard on Monday. Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said the woman suffered a head injury and was treated on scene.

“The video really makes me mad,” Herman said. “You see a bunch of elderly people eating in a lunchroom setting, and the person who actually works at the facility walks up to this 88-year-old female and basically forces her out of a chair, stands her up, and at some point, she ends up pushing the 88-year-old to the ground backwards.”

The woman suffers from dementia, Herman said, indicating that she may have not remembered the alleged attack happened at all. When confronted by managers at the facility, Martinez allegedly denied having assaulted the woman, claiming she fell on her own, according to court documents.

“The video doesn’t lie,” Herman said. “It is what it is.”

The woman was swiftly fired from Autumn Grove Cottage, Herman said. He commended their response and cooperation.

The facility did not respond to a request for comment.

Martinez was charged with second-degree felony injury to the elderly, which carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence, if she’s convicted.
