A weak front could bring strong storms late today

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A rare summer front pushing into Texas Friday will trigger strong thunderstorms north of Houston this afternoon and evening. Until then, it should stay fairly quiet.
Temperatures are starting off mild and muggy. It’ll be another hot and mostly dry afternoon in the mid 90s until the front pushes toward our northern counties and sparks scattered thunderstorms. Because these storms will form in the heat of the day, they will be strong and capable of producing gusty winds and small hail. These storms could reach Houston by the evening, with more rain possible along and ahead of the front into Saturday. Locations north of I-10 are more likely to see the rain, but also more likely to see any severe weather.

We don’t expect any cooler air to reach Southeast Texas, but we could have some rain-cooled neighborhoods Saturday afternoon. Slightly drier air could provide minor humidity relief north of I-10, but it’ll be tough for that air to filter all the way into Houston. Either way, temperatures Sunday will warm into the 90s with only a 20% chance of additional rains.

The weather system pushing this front into Texas should also shield us from any tropical influences. This will turn Hurricane Isaias up the East Coast of the United States, far away from us in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico.

We’ll continue to have a chance of rain during the first half of next week, but toward the end of the week a heat ridge will build overhead, bringing back hot, mostly dry weather for the first week of August. At this time we expect highs in the mid 90s, right at the average for this time of year.
