Arlington pastor arrested on child porn charges also was school volunteer

A pastor who was arrested Wednesday on charges of possessing child pornography also was a volunteer on an Arlington school district campus.

Brett Monroe, 38, was arrested by Arlington police at his home on Wednesday. He faces one count of possession of child pornography.

Arlington ISD officials confirmed on Friday that Monroe was a registered volunteer at Corey Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language, KXAS-TV (NBC5) reported.

“To date, the district has not received any claims of inappropriate behavior from parents or students related to this individual,” the district said in a statement to media. “We encourage parents to talk to their children and report any suspicious behavior.”

District officials said Monroe passed a background check that was conducted before his arrest.

Monroe was a part of the staff at Heritage Baptist Church in Arlington, but his name has been removed from the church’s website.

Heritage pastor George Newcomb said Monroe’s employment was immediately terminated per church policy.

“When a criminal allegation involves inappropriate conduct toward a child or children, our organization immediately suspends or terminates that individual from employment and from any contact with children pending the outcome of the criminal matter, and we fully cooperate with parents, state officials, and law enforcement,” Newcomb said in a statement to NBC5.
