Armed security guard tries to break up argument, gets in shootout in southeast Houston

An armed security guard got into a shootout with a man who was choking a woman in parking lot early Thursday in southeast Houston, police said.

The security guard, who was attempting to break up an argument between the man and a woman, was shot in the leg, but it is unclear whether the man was struck by any of the guard’s round, police said

The incident occurred in the 11400 block of Fuqua Street near Interstate 45 around 12:30 a.m. Thursday morning, police said.

The security guard, identified as 30-year-old Anthony Lee Reyes, was working in the area, when he saw a man and a woman get into a verbal altercation, Det. V. Habukiha said.

As he was attempting to check out the situation, the male suspect drew a weapon and fired at the security guard, Habukiha said.

“The security guard fired back a couple of rounds as well,” he said.

The guard was hit one time in his lower right leg, he said. He was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive, Habukiha said.

The suspect fled with the woman in a vehicle and drove to a nearby apartment complex on the 111000 block of Fuqua, where he later shot at another man. That man was not hurt in the incident. The woman was taken into custody for questioning.

It’s unclear how the second man is connected to the incident, but police are searching for the suspect.

No other information about the case is known at this time.
