Bicyclist dead after hit-and-run in Third Ward

A bicyclist is dead after a hit-and-run in the Third Ward overnight, Houston Police said.

The male bicyclist was crossing the street at Hutchins Street and Alabama Street when he was struck by a white truck. The bicyclist was dead at the scene.

Witnesses at the scene say the driver of the truck briefly stopped, but did not get out of the car, and then fled the scene at a high speed.

The bicyclist was traveling southbound when he failed to yield at a stop sign, police said. The truck was traveling westbound and did not have a stop sign.

A bicycle lane is planned for Hutchins Street in the area between Gray and Cleburne, which includes the Alabama crossing. The project is still in the design stage, according to the city.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run should call crime stoppers at 713-222-8477.
