Boy, 2, shoots self in leg in Houston’s Acres Homes, police say

A young boy was rushed to the hospital after shooting himself in the leg on accident, police said.

Officers were called to a home in the 5000 block of Paradise Lane around 12:10 p.m. after a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the leg, just above the knee, officers on scene said. An ambulance was seen leaving the home with its lights and sirens on, followed by a Houston police officer.

The boy was alone with his mother in the home, a Houston police sergeant on scene told Chron.com. It appears the firearm was lying around when the boy got hold of it, the sergeant said.

He was awake and breathing when paramedics rushed him to Texas Children’s Hospital for treatment, police said. Officers on scene said the boy is expected to survive.

Detectives are speaking with the boy’s mother and other family members at Texas Children’s Hospital to determine how the boy got hold of the firearm. They have yet to determine if any charges will be filed.
