Caution urged as wind gusts blow through Houston area

Wind gusts of up to 30 mph were reported around the Houston area Monday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service to ask motorists to take it easy on the roads.

Gusts of 31 mph were reported at Bush Intercontinental Airport on Monday, with slightly stronger gusts observed at Tomball/Hooks Airport.

In a tweet, the National Weather Service likened the winds to a hair dryer and urged drivers to be careful on overpasses and elevated roadways.

Houston-area residents are in for more hot and humid weather this week, forecasters reported.

High temperatures are expected to hit 90 degrees multiple times this week, including Monday. The National Weather Service has reminded residents to be wary of heat-related safety issues, including leavings kids and pets inside vehicles.

People who plan to be outside should stay hydrated, apply sunscreen, dress in light clothing and take breaks in the shade.

The best chance for rain comes Tuesday. Meteorologists predict a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms with a high of 89 degree.

Breezy conditions will also dominate much of the week, especially near the coast, the weather service said.
