City Council confirms Houston’s first female public works director

City Council confirmed Carol Haddock, interim director of Houston’s Department of Public Works and Engineering, as the department’s permanent chief on Wednesday.

Haddock, who has led the department since July, became the first woman to hold the post.

“It doesn’t need to be noted, but at the same time it is of note: capable, competent, qualified, and also happens I believe to be the first female,” Mayor Sylvester Turner said following Haddock’s confirmation.

Haddock took over public works after former director Karun Sreerama was suspended and ultimately stepped down following revelations that he made payments to a Houston Community College trustee who has pleaded guilty to accepting bribes.
