Court: Accused gunman in deadly Channelview home invasion also accidentally killed accomplice cousin

A 19-year-old man accused of masterminding a deadly drug-related home invasion in Channelview accidentally shot and killed a cousin who was an accomplice in the attack, a prosecutor said at a court hearing for the alleged triggerman.

Jose Pablo Urbina is charged with capital murder in the break-in early Wednesday at a home in the 16300 block of Pecan Street. When Harris County sheriff’s deputies arrived after receiving reports of several shots being fired, they found the body of Bryant Saul Delatorre, who had been shot several times.

About a mile away, in the 15200 block of Market Street, deputies found the body of another man, shot in the torso and later linked to the fatal break-in, the prosecutor said Friday at a probable cause hearing for Urbina. The identity of that man is unclear.

Urbina apparently recruited others for the job as well, according to statements the prosecutor read at the court hearing.

One of the recruits told authorities that Urbina planned the attack and that he went along because he needed the money. The recruit also said he saw Urbina shoot Delatorre in the head with a shotgun.

Delatorre was found in a bedroom, sitting against a wall, the prosecutor said. He was shot several times in the head, neck and body. Several pounds of marijuana, packaged in individual bags, were nearby and a large-screen television monitor was on, displaying surveillance images from inside and outside the home, she added.

After Delatorre was killed, Urbina accidentally discharged a weapon that struck his cousin, the recruit said. The attackers placed the cousin in the bed of a pickup truck and dumped his body along the road. The crime scene included a bloody trail that extended from outside Delatorre’s home, across a lawn and then to the street where the pickup was parked.

A Crime Stoppers tip led authorities to the pickup and a residence in Channelview. A man who is listed as living there told authorities that Urbina arrived there and soon began yelling and punching the walls, the prosecutor said.

Urbina allegedly said he had shot a man “face-in,” then added, “I sacrificed my cousin.”
