Dallas police say murder suspect fatally shot a man whose sister was dating his brother

Dallas police say a man fatally shot his brother’s girlfriend’s brother after an altercation in southeast Dallas in June.

A Dallas County grand jury indicted Octavia Wilkerson, 30, Monday on one count of murder in the death of 41-year-old Eric Burnley.

Police were called the afternoon of June 24 to an apartment in the 6100 block of Trail Glen Drive, where Burnley had been wounded. He was taken to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas and pronounced dead.

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, Burnley’s sister, who lives at that address, had gotten into an argument with her boyfriend, who refused to leave the apartment and locked himself in a bedroom.

The boyfriend then got into a physical altercation with his girlfriend and several of her family members, including Burnley, police said. They eventually calmed down and the couple resumed discussing their relationship, the boyfriend told police.

But the boyfriend had already called his brother — Wilkerson — asking to be picked up because of the confrontation, and Burnley answered the door when he arrived.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud argument between Burnley and Wilkerson downstairs, followed by several gunshots and Wilkerson walking upstairs with a gun in his hand, the affidavit says.

According to one of the witnesses, Burnley said “You did not have to shoot me” as he lay on the floor bleeding.

Wilkerson, who was arrested July 1, remains in the Dallas County jail with bail set at $500,000. He does not have an attorney listed in court records.

Wilkerson has previously been convicted in Dallas County of aggravated assault and family violence assault, court records show.
