Drive-by that killed 11-year-old Houston boy was retaliation for previous shooting, records show

A man accused of fatally shooting an 11-year-old boy earlier this month at a Channelview home was allegedly retaliating for a previous drive-by shooting, according to Harris County court records.

Sonnie Reyes, 21, has been charged with murder in the death of 11-year-old Kamren Jones, who was shot June 9 while sleeping with his family in their home in the 15100 block of Bentwood.

Reyes is connected to a street gang but not a documented member, according to court filings that requested a $250,000 bond for Reyes. He used a 7.62 mm rifle in the drive-by shooting, the documents say.

The document did not elaborate on any details related to the previous drive-by shooting, including when it occurred.

“The nature of the offense, shooting into an occupied house in the middle of the night and killing a child who should have been safe in his bed, indicates the viciousness of [Reyes] and that he presents a grave danger to the community,” prosecutors alleged in the document.

Reyes’ bond has not yet been set, and a hearing has not yet been listed in court records.

Kamren and his six siblings — whose ages range from 5 to 15 — had been living in the rental home since May when the shooting left it riddled with bullets.

The boy’s father, Kenyatta Jones, has described his son as his “go-to” guy who excelled in sports and helped get the younger siblings ready for school.

“I’m just coming to grips with not having my son and not being able to take him to the gym with me,” Kenyatta Jones said.
