Dying on the job: Some of the 100-plus Houston people who lost their lives at work in 2018

More than 100 workers were killed in Houston in 2018, and leaders are now working to lower that number for the years to come.

Those deaths in the Houston area accounted for about 20 percent of workplace deaths statewide in 2018, according to a Houston Chronicle report detailing a pilot program aimed at preventing future fatalities. The article outlines how labor leaders, workers’ rights groups, city and congressional officials are coming together to accomplish the goal.

Inspired by New York’s response after Hurricane Sandy, part of the plan includes worker protections like higher base pay, safety training and workers’ compensation.

During a press conference Tuesday, the workers killed were memorialized. See some of those killed in the slideshow above.
