Gun store owner shoots would-be robber, scares off 3 others in Richardson

A Richardson gun store owner shot a would-be robber Thursday afternoon, police say, and three others fled after the crime.

Police said the incident took place about 3 p.m. at Mike’s Gun Room in the 1000 block of East Belt Line Road.

Several men wearing masks walked into the store and acted like customers, Mike Brown told KDFW-TV (Channel 4). Police said two of the four had guns.

Brown, 77, told the station that they put guns to the back of his head and started grabbing dozens of firearms.

He said he pretended he had a heart condition and needed medication so that he could grab his handgun. He shot one of the men in the shoulder.

“I’m sorry I had to shoot somebody, but — better than Plan B,” Brown told KDFW.

The others fled and drove west in a silver or gray car, possibly a Chevrolet Impala, with a paper license plate, police said. Police did not provide detailed suspect descriptions.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. His identity has not been released by police.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said the three robbers who fled stole 53 handguns.

Anyone with information about the incident may call police at 972-744-4800 or the ATF at 1-888-283-8477. The ATF is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information related to this incident.
