Harris County Sheriff’s deputy shoots man who reached for handgun, officials say

A Harris County Sheriff’s deputy shot a man early Saturday morning in northwest Houston after the man reached for a handgun, officials said.

The incident at an apartment complex parking lot in the Greater Inwood area came after a sheriff’s sergeant and two deputies spotted a car they believed was involved in a robbery earlier that evening. Several people standing around the car fled as the officers approached, while two men got inside and shut the doors, Lt. Robert Minchew said.

The sheriff’s officers asked the men to exit the car, according to Metro Video. As one of the men stepped out, he reached for a handgun, Minchew said. The deputy standing closest to the car fired at the man three times, striking him twice. He was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive, officials said.

The three officers were uninjured, according to Minchew. He said the man had the gun in his hand when he was shot, though it was not immediately clear if the man had a chance to point the gun at the officers.

Houston police were planning to investigate the shooting, which took place just inside city limits, Asst. Chief Larry Satterwhite said. The sheriff’s office would conduct an internal investigation, Minchew said, adding that officials determined the car does match one involved in the earlier robbery.

Minchew declined to identify the officers, though he said the sergeant has worked at the sheriff’s office for 17 years. The deputies have 10 and six years of experience, he said.
