Houston-area woman excited about ending cancer treatment breaks the celebration bell

The day cancer patients finds out that they have successfully finished their radiation treatment is undoubtedly one of the most momentous in their lives. Who wouldn’t be excited to get such great news?

Well, Darla Jaye was apparently a little more enthusiastic than others. So much so that she broke the celebration bell.

The Harris Health System tweeted a video of the Houston-area woman doing the traditional ring after she completed her last round of radiation treatment for breast cancer.

“I’ve looked forward to this day since February,” Jaye told HHS.  “I was scared to death, but you guys saved my life!”

According to the MD Anderson website, the now-widespread tradition of cancer patients ringing a bell was introduced in 1996 at MD Anderson when U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Irve Le Moyne, a patient with head and neck cancer, installed a brass bell at the main campus Radiation Treatment Center.

“Patients who finish treatment at MD Anderson’s Proton Therapy Center make a bit louder noise by banging a gong to symbolize the restoration of balance, harmony and life energy,” the site states.

When it was Darla Jaye’s turn at bat, she gave the ringer all she had, which was apparently more than it could handle. The strap went flying, and Darla went laughing.

“I broke the bell!” Jaye could be heard saying on the video.  The staff also had a good laugh, and assured her it could be fixed.

At least we know Darla has her strength back. Congrats on knocking out cancer.
