Houston crime climbs for third month; burglary rises, theft drops

Crime reports in Houston saw an overall increase last month, for the third month in a row, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources.

Incidents rose by 0.1 percent, from 8,908 in November to 8,915 in December.

Burglary and assault reports increased the most from the previous month. Burglary rose from 1,204 reported incidents in November to 1,307 in December. Assault incidents went from 872 to 971 for the month, or about an 11 percent increase.

While a somewhat smaller category, there was also a notable percentage increase last month in robbery, from 689 incidents per month to 750. Robbery reports have decreased since the same month last year.

There were two vandalism reports last month. Vandalism incidents remained at about the same level as in the previous month.

Among the few types of offenses that saw a downturn last month, theft reports went from 5,734 to 5,706. Shooting incidents fell from 43 to 28, and arson incidents went down from two to one.

Looking at crime patterns in different areas of the city, Fairbanks / Northwest Crossing, East Houston and the Heights saw the largest increase from November to December. Gulfton, Sunnyside and Willow Meadows / Willowbend Area also saw considerable percentage increases in crime offenses for the month, although they continue to have lower overall crime levels.

Saturdays, Mondays and Fridays produced the most reported crimes last month. The largest increase from the previous month occurred on Sundays, Mondays and Saturdays, while incidents on Fridays, Thursdays and Tuesdays went down. Early afternoon, late afternoon and midday continue to see the most crime incidents on average each day.
