HPD officer recovering after being shot; suspect dead

A Houston police officer was shot Thursday night while struggling with a robbery suspect who was later killed by a fellow officer is recuperating in the hospital as authorities continue to search for another suspect in a brutal crime spree.

The officer, who has not been identifed, will remain hospitalized until at least late next week, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said Friday.

Two other men were taken into custody after the spree, which began about 10 p.m. in the southeast side’s MacGregor neighborhood. At one point during the incident, the attackers ordered a priest to his knees at gunpoint, Acevedo said.

The wounded 29-year-old officer, a five-year veteran with the Houston Police Department, was shot at least once in the gut while trying to subdue one of the attackers.

He underwent hours of surgery at nearby Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center Friday morning and was listed in stable condition in the intensive care unit.
