Man died of self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting wife, Irving police say

Irving police say a man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting his wife Saturday morning, police said.

Officers were sent about 10 a.m. to the 800 block of Elwood Road, near Grauwyler and Nursery roads, where a woman said she had been shot by her husband.

The suspect was found in the backyard of a neighboring property, police said. Officers entered the yard and announced themselves, police said.

Police spokesman Robert Reeves said Monday that one of the two officers there fired a shot at the suspect, which missed. The suspect also fired once, striking himself in the head, Reeves said.

The suspect, identified Monday as 59-year-old Rogelio Castro, did not shoot at officers, Reeves said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim, Castro’s wife, was hospitalized after the shooting. She has since been released from the hospitall and is recovering, Reeves said Monday.

Reeves said he did not have details about whether Castro had a history of domestic violence.

No officers were hurt.
