Man found shot to death in abandoned apartment in north Harris County

A man in his 20s was found dead of a gunshot wound Thursday afternoon at an abandoned apartment in north Harris County, police said.

The man’s family said they were unable to reach him and went to a complex in the 300 block of Highland Cross Drive to look for him, according to Harris County Sheriff’s Office officials. The relatives jumped a fence, went into the apartment and found him “dead from an apparent gunshot wound,” Sgt. Ben Beall said

Hours after the find, Beall said investigators anticipate the death to be a murder investigation and that a search warrant is being obtained before entering the apartment.

Authorities did not provide a description of a suspect but said at least one other man was at the apartment with the dead man that afternoon.

“He left the scene and nobody’s been able to get in touch with him,” Beall said.

The apartment unit was being subleased to a couple, who had recently been evicted, the sergeant continued. The couple was still going to-and-from the apartment.
