Meat thief on the run after trucker found dead, cargo missing

A trucker trying to deliver a load of frozen meat from Laredo to Houston was found dead in his cab Saturday – and his shipment was nowhere to be found.

Houston police officers were called out to 175 McCarty Road around 1 p.m. Saturday and found the 48-year-old truck driver dead in his cab, in an “advanced state of decomposition,” police said. He had left a Laredo shipping center July 29, and was scheduled to arrive in Houston to deliver a load of frozen meat the following day.

But he never made the scheduled delivery, police said, and the owners of the truck he was driving immediately started searching for him.

Officers tracked the truck down to the address off McCarty on Saturday afternoon, where they made the grisly discovery. The truck had been burglarized, police said, and the contents of his trailer were missing.

How he died will be determined by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Anyone with information on the man’s death is urged to call the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
