Mother of Plano woman killed in estranged husband’s rampage doesn’t blame bartender charged with overserving him

The mother of a woman killed along with seven others by her estranged husband at a Cowboys watch party in Plano says she doesn’t blame a bartender recently charged with overserving the man before his 2017 rampage.

“I feel badly for her that she has gotten caught up in this vortex because of an evil man,” Debbie Lane, the mother of Meredith Hight, told KXAS-TV (NBC5).

Bartender Lindsey Glass, 27, was taken into custody last week and charged with violating a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code regarding “sale to certain persons,” a misdemeanor carrying a punishment of up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $500.

Glass worked at Plano’s Local Public House, where Spencer Hight had been drinking on Sept. 10, 2017. From there he would go to the home of his estranged wife, killing her and seven others before being fatally shot by a Plano police officer.

Shortly after the killings, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission opened an investigation into the bar, concluding in a 2018 report that Glass served Spencer Hight after he had displayed signs of intoxication.

According to the report, Glass continued to serve Hight drinks even as he spun a large knife on the counter.

Lane told NBC5 that Glass may not have realized how drunk Hight was.

He “was a blackout drunk who was very well practiced at pretending he was sober, and he was good at it,” Lane said. “I believe he fooled her, because he fooled us.”

Local Public House eventually agreed to give up its liquor license and has since closed.
