Murder suspect shot victim, then beat him in Oak Lawn yard as neighbor filmed, Dallas police say

The suspect in a weekend slaying in Oak Lawn shot and repeatedly hit the victim after the two had gone out drinking and used drugs, police say.

Officers found 38-year-old David Young dead in a front yard after they were called to the 4300 block of Dickason Avenue, near Douglas Avenue, about 5:15 a.m. Sunday. There was a Smith & Wesson revolver next to his body, with one live round, police said.

Police wrote in an arrest-warrant affidavit that a neighbor heard gunshots and saw a man chase Young into the yard. She started recording the incident with her cellphone as the attacker stood over Young and pummeled him, but fled to her car when the man started approaching her.

She called 911 and said that a man in a bright green shirt had just killed another man, police said.

Just then, a Dallas officer had approached a man in a green shirt — later identified as 30-year-old Kamron Michael Bell — who had stepped into traffic at a nearby intersection and was hit by a vehicle. Bell, who had bloody clothes and hands, was taken to a hospital for an examination, but he had no open wounds, the affidavit says.

Police said a trail of blood led them from Young to an apartment on Dickason Avenue. Inside they found four bullet casings and Bell’s ID, the affidavit says.

Detectives interviewed Bell after he was released from the hospital.

According to the affidavit, he said he was staying with Young and that two had gone out for dinner and drinks, then used drugs as they walked back to the apartment. He said he owned a Smith & Wesson revolver, but he said the only other thing he remembered from that night was calling his father.

Bell stopped talking to police after they told him that Bell had died, the affidavit says. He was booked into the Dallas County jail on a murder charge.

Bell remained in custody Monday, with bail set at $500,000. An attorney for him could not immediately be reached for comment.
