Officials ID man who reportedly drove from California to kill Flower Mound teen he knew from online gaming

Authorities identified a 23-year-old man who police say drove from California to Flower Mound and killed a teenager and then returned home and took his own life as officials attempted to arrest him.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau identified the man as Alexander Frank Baro, Flower Mound police said Friday.

Police have said Baro lured 18-year-old Matthew Thane outside his home in the 3600 block of Green Meadow Lane the morning of Aug. 18 by setting a propane tank on fire.

Officers who responded to the home just before 6 a.m. found Thane shot to death.

Police have said that Thane and Baro knew each other through online gaming. Thane, who used the handle mJapan, streamed himself playing games, including Call of Duty, on Twitch.

According to police, cellphone data showed that Baro drove from Pleasanton, Calif., to Flower Mound and back — nearly a 1,700-mile trip each way — in a 72-hour period around the time of Thane’s death.

When police in Pleasanton tried to get him to walk out of his home Aug. 19, he killed himself, authorities said.

Flower Mound police said they are still processing evidence and will release more information about the case later
