Partial roof collapse at Atascocita sports bar leads to injury of firefighter

A partial roof collapse during a fire at an Atascocita sports bar led to the injury of a firefighter. The three-alarm fire broke out at Coaches Parroteyes Sports Grill, 5304 East FM 1960.

The roof collapse blocked the firefighters initial entrance point, necessitating a mayday call. The firefighters that initial entered the burning building were then removed by a Rapid Intervention Team stationed outside.

The injured firefighter was treated with symptoms of smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.

“The fire quickly escalated to a two-alarm fire. In the course of fighting the fire a partial roof collapse occurred, blocking the egress of the initial attack team from Atascocita. A mayday call was broadcast which triggered the immediate response of the Rapid Intervention Team,” said Jerry Dilliard, public information officer with Atascocita Fire Department.

“During the extrication of the firefighter, his Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus ran low on air. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the attack team’s lieutenant took action to move the firefighter to a safe haven, within the building, to await the RIT.”

The firefighter was “transported” to an area hospital after he was injured inside the building,

The Harris County Fire Marshall’s office is on the scene and investigating a three-alarm fire that injured a firefighter at an Atascocita sports bar. There is no timetable on the completion of the investigation, authorities said.

“Investigations can take anywhere from a couple hours to a couple days,” said Rachel Moreno, public information officer for the HCFMO.

The fire broke out at Coaches Parroteyes Sports Grill, 5304 East FM 1960.

One firefighter was “transported” after he was injured inside the building, said Jerry Dilliard, public information officer with Atascocita Fire Department

“A mayday was called and a Rapid Intervention Team pulled him out, ” he said.

Another officer was treated on the scene for chest pains, Dilliard said. Dilliard could not comment on the status of the injured firefighter who was transported to an area hospital.

Dilliard said the blaze turned into a three-alarm fire quickly after crews arrived on scene. Seven different departments responded to the fire, Dilliard said.
