Pedestrian fatally struck on I-45 by off-duty firefighter

A driver in a black Dodge truck fatally struck a pedestrian who attempted to cross Interstate 45 southbound at Parker Sunday morning.

Multiple witnesses said they saw the adult white male trying to dodge traffic on the freeway shortly before 6 a.m., but an off-duty firefighter couldn’t avoid him. The driver was uninjured

All lanes of I-45 southbound were diverted as the vehicle crimes division of the Houston Police Department investigated.

“I know it’s kind of burdensome to travel to the nearest overpass and go under the freeway,” said Commander Kenneth Campbell of the traffic enforcement division, as the investigation was underway. “But it’s what we would suggest.”

In the background, traffic stacked up behind a police blockade and two sneakers lay prone on the freeway
