Police fire bean bag gun at stolen vehicle during standoff in SE Houston

Police fired a bean bag gun at a car during a standoff with the driver in southeast Houston early Monday morning, police said.

HPD officers spotted the man driving a stolen car around 1 a.m. at Park Row and Bellfort. The car had been taken during a previous aggravated robbery.

When the officer activated their emergency lights, the driver led police on a chase down Barkley toward Winkler. The road eventually ended and the suspect jumped a ditch, slamming into two poles near a shopping center near Winkler and Barkley, according to Metro Video.

Houston police commanded the man to get out of the vehicle, but the man refused. Police eventually decided to use a bean bag gun to break the window in an effort to see inside the vehicle.

The man stepped out of the car when he heard the bean bag hit the window, and he was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries. It’s unclear what charges he might face.

During the standoff, a police canine “made contact” with an officer but didn’t break the skin, police said.

The dog bit near where the officer keeps a large knife in his pocket. The officer was treated on the scene and did not need to be taken to a hospital.
