Police: Man accused of burglarizing Islamic Center has a track record of targeting religious centers

A Houston man reportedly known for targeting religious centers is now charged with stealing thousands of dollars from donation boxes at the Katy Islamic Center in two separate burglaries.

Loyd Richard Smith Jr., 40, was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of burglary of a building, according to a release from the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.

Smith is accused of targeting the Katy Islamic Center located at 24740 Saddle Spur Lane twice over the last two years. Smith allegedly stole between $2,000 and $5,000 in cash and checks from donation boxes at the center on Dec. 1, 2018. The amount stolen during the second burglary, which took place on April 12, 2019, is not known, according to officials with the sheriff’s office.

Police said Smith admitted he was guilty of both charges. He has a lengthy criminal record across several counties and is known to target religious centers in the past, according to the release.

Smith is currently in the Fort Bend County Jail. His bond is set at $25,000
